Palma's Photography and Art
Welcome! Here you will find my specialty - photography - along with mixed media and painting pursuits.
It's hard to say when my interest in photography began. Growing up there was the shelved family Instamatic not free to touch, but my parents did discover a selfie in a pack of prints developed later that year. They expressed it as cute but blurry. Nevertheless it earned a spot in the family album. In college a friend from the paper let me play with his Nikon during a balloon launch but I never saw the results. In 1983 my Dad gifted me a Canon AE1. I remember the first photo I took with that; a fence post with a no trespassing sign with a short depth of field, blurring the barn in the background. By accident. I was in love. I just had to figure out how I did that. So it began.
Early on, photography was a mom-hobby. I gradually accumulated clients, exhibits, invites as stringer to papers, events and even creating negatives for the local historical museum archives. I dug up and accepted as much work as I could. Working in the darkroom of the local camera club with members as my teachers was priceless. Eventually I opened a studio and worked in stock, portraits, editorial and commercial work. When digital hit in early 2000's I joined a fine art gallery.
Now, 40 years later, we are "imaging". Darkroom magic still has it's place and I consider it as imaging as well, just in a different way. I believe that a successful image must answer the question, "Why", no matter the origin, tools or media used.
Within the past few years I re-kindled playing with paint and mixed media - It simply adds pleasure therapy to my day.
Stay tuned as I go on and learn some more. There's always more to learn through and about art which leads to learning about the self, something we will never outgrow.
